Abstract

Sweet corn seeds were treated with hot air dry at 70 C for 1 or 3 days, and the vigour of the treated seeds was evaluated. When the seeds were allowed to germinate on moistened rolled sheets of paper towels, the heat treated seeds showed more rapid water absorption than the control seeds. B -amylase activity in seeds during imbibition decreased with increase in the duration of heat treatment at 70 C. The seeds were soaked for 40 hours and leachate from seeds was tested for electrical conducitvity (EC), and for protein, amino acids, sugars, potassium and magnesium contents. EC and content in seed leachate increased with increasing temperature and duration of heat treatment on the seeds. seed leakage was negatively correlated with emegence of the seedling in field tests. After heat treatment at 70 C for 1 day, the seeds were sealed in tin cans and kept in cold room (10 C, 55 % RH) and their storability waws evalutated. Percent germination in the laboratory, seedling height and seedling leaf area in the field were not significantly different between heat treated and non - heated seeds through 12 months of storage. Seedling emergence and dry weight in field test were significantly different between treated and the control seeds after they were stored for 12 month, while EC was significantly different as soon as the storage was initiated. In conclusion EC and composition of the seed leachte were sensitive indicators to determine the rate of deterioration and the vigour of sweet corn seeds.

Abstract

Gibberellic acid (GA subscript 3), boric acid (H subscript 2 BO subscript 3), zince sulfate (ZnSO subscript 4) and potassium nitrate (KNO subscript 3) was applied during the imbibition stage of germination process. It was found that 50 ppm GA subscript 3 could not improve percentage of seed germination, but it promoted root growth and accumulation dry matter of seedling. The application of 3-9 ppm Boron of H subscript 2 BO subscript 3 or application of 1 and 5 ppm ZnSO subscript 4 could upgrade germination percentage of sweet corn and yard long bean seeds. Furthermore, seedling root length and seedling dry weight were increased by these applications, particularly in low vigour seeds. Application of 5-10 meq.l superscript -1 KNO subscript 3 retarded germination of sweet corn and yard long bean seeds.

Abstract

The new harvested cucumber seeds, local varieties often fail to germinate, because of dormancy. It take over 5-6 storage months until dormancy phenomenon disappear. The hot dry air treatment at 60o, 65o, 70o, 75o or 80oC for 1 to 7 days or 90oC for 1 to 24 hours could break that dormancy. Dry heat treatment at 70oC for 3 days obtained the best result. This treatment could up grade in germination from the initial 20% and proved good growing characteristic in either vegetative or generative organs as near as untreated seeds. Further more, soaking cucumber seeds in warm water at 45o, 50o, 50o and 60oC for 20-60 minutes has been done for breaking seed dormancy. Soaking seeds at 60oC for 40 minutes show that results among hot wet treatment, but it still was not better than hot dry air treatment at 70oC for 3 days.
